It's time to revisit The Castle of Cagliostro!
This time next week, on May 14th 2022, popular streaming service Netflix will be removing Hayao Miyazaki’s directorial debut, Lupin III:The Castle of Cagliostro, from their platform.
While we are unclear on the reason for this, the decision is a tough pill for the community to swallow. This is not only because The Castle of Cagliostro is considered a fantastic film, but also as the Netflix version is one of the most accessible pieces of Lupin III content available. It serves as a great way of onboarding potential new fans, as it is easy to recommend, thanks to its partial detachment from the long-running source material, and its ease of access.
As a final send-off for Netflix’s version of the film, I am asking everybody to get involved! I urge the Lupin community to all come together, and revisit the classic adventure by watching Cagliostro this week, between May 7th and May 13th, 2022.
If you have access to the platform, and the film is available on it in your country, please prioritise the Netflix version over any other. While it lacks the favourable Manga UK English dub, I think it would be beneficial for Netflix to see the numbers tick up slightly, ahead of its removal from the service.
The Netflix version is available in a wide array of territories, including the United States, and does contain both Japanese original and English Streamline audio versions, while offering 1080p HD visuals.
If you do not have access to Netflix, then not to worry! Please still feel free to get involved, and watch along using a DVD, Blu-ray, or other streamed version. In addition, if you have never seen the film before, this is the perfect time to jump in.
If you have access to social media, post your thoughts using the hashtag #CagliostroRewatch, and check out what others think of the film. Is this your viewing, or have you seen it before? When was the first time you saw it, and how would you rank it against other Lupin films?
Feel free to use the hashtag, and let the community know what Cagliostro means to you!
