Hayao Miyazaki gives up driving, donates classic car
Can you believe that after all of these years, famed Studio Ghibli director Hayao Miyazaki still owns his Citroën 2CV, and drives it to work every single workday?
That is, up until recently. It was confirmed at an event held in Nagoya City that called for the prevention of accidents by the elderly that the legendary animator had given up his time behind the wheel. Despite being as active as he is in the workplace, what with the recently released The Boy and the Heron and with reportedly more film ideas up in the rafters, Miyazaki has chosen to step away from his four wheels for both his safety and the safety of others, hoping to set an example that people a similar age to him can follow.
The car itself, which can be seen pictured above, is due to go on show at the Ghibli Park, which is located in Aichi Prefecture. There, fans of the director and his films can see the Citroën presented in all its glory, where we hope it will remain for many years to come.
As you will no doubt already know, the Citroën 2CV made an appearance in Miyazaki’s first feature length film as a director, The Castle of Cagliostro. There, it starred along the famous Fiat 500, which itself was the personal car of the late Yasuo Ōtsuka. Driven by Clarisse de Cagliostro, the Citroën helped bring some of the real world into Lupin, and provided a vital set-piece for the film’s famous car chase sequence. Since Cagliostro, the car has also featured in other Studio Ghibli works as a cameo, including the recent 3DCG animated feature, The Earwig and the Witch.
