Part 6 "Episode 0" available to stream for free in the U.S!
Episode 0: The Times from 2021’s Lupin III: Part 6 is now available to stream on YouTube in the United States for a limited time.
The prequel episode, which acted as a superb send-off for Kiyoshi Kobayashi, the late voice talent for gruff gunslinger Jigen Daisuke, can be watched for free from now until September 30th, 2022.
In it, Jigen and the gang come together off the back of Lupin III: Part 5 to discuss their roles within the thieving world, and modern day society in general. Jigen contemplates retirement, but after spending time thinking on the past, he settles on valiantly moving forwards, with the mindset of that he is simply a “classic” living in a modern era.
While tonally different from the rest of Part 6, and more akin to Part 5 in its storytelling, The Times is one of the better episodes of the latest series, and is an essential watch for fans of Jigen. The episode is only available on YouTube in Japanese, but can still be enjoyed in English dubbed format via HIDIVE. This kind of misses the point, though, in my opinion. Even if you do prefer the English dub, I would encourage you to give the Japanese version a shot. The Japanese voice cast are always a blast to listen to, but The Times in particular is a way of honouring Jigen’s legendary voice actor, who was at the age of eighty-eight at the time of recording this episode.
May he rest in peace!
