Cagliostro comes to North American cinemas in 4K this summer!
GKIDS Films have announced that they are bringing The Castle of Cagliostro back to cinemas in North America this summer - only this time in 4K!
The popular 1979 release marked Hayao Miyazaki’s first role as a feature length film director. Now a celebrated animator of Studio Ghibli fame, Miyazaki worked on the Lupin III television series during his pre-Ghibli days, and his work on Cagliostro was treat as a farewell point between him and the series.
While bringing in slightly underwhelming numbers in theatres at the time - over twenty years on, the film is now not only hailed as one of the highlights of the Lupin III series, but is also recognised as a classic around the globe. It helped inspire many others, and is still referenced in animation as recently as Disney Pixar’s Luca, which launched earlier this month.
Footage shown at the event is likely to be the same remastered version of the film used as part of Discotek Media’s 4K UHD Blu-ray home video release. The original Japanese audio version (with English language subtitles) has been confirmed to be the default showing, although GKIDS have reported that some theatres may run the 1992 English dub.
Screenings start as early as July 16th, with additional locations and dates to be announced as we move further into summer. You can visit the official GKIDS mini-site to keep track of additional screen locations, and also check out a trailer for the event below.
The initial three showings are planned at the following theatres:
IFC Center (New York) - July 16th
Landmark Westwood (Los Angeles) - July 30th
The Roxie (San Francisco) - July 30th
Please visit the website of each for more information as we approach nearer to the air date, and book tickets in advance to secure yourself a seat.
As always, wear a mask if you are not exempt when around others or in busy areas of the cinema, and follow the usual COVID-19 protocols to ensure you remain safe. Only visit the cinema if you feel well and safe to do so.
