Unofficial ROM hack places Lupin into classic NES game Mappy!

Unofficial ROM hack places Lupin into classic NES game Mappy!

Fan of video games? Of course you are! Well, there’s some good news, as you can now play as Lupin III in the classic Famicom / NES home console port of the popular 1983 released Namco arcade title, Mappy!

Created by Crying Onion, Protopixel, and Terwilf, this brand-new unofficial ROM hack features an updated title screen, new character / item graphics, and more. The pip-squeak hero Mappy has been replaced with Lupin himself, and the cat enemies have been swapped out with Inspector Zenigata, in addition to his fellow officers of the law.

The gameplay of Mappy involves players attempting to navigate around a multi-level building, collecting items and avoiding enemies. Once all items are collected, players can progress on to the next stage (with a selection of different stage layouts adding some variety to the gameplay). Doors can be opened and closed, making avoiding enemies a game of strategy. Trampolines can also be used to help reach higher floors and platforms. There’s a bonus stage, too, in which players must collect a number of balloons in a set amount of time.

I have personally had a good time with Mappy in the past, and the NES port captures the sprit of the arcade original perfectly. The Lupin III theme works incredibly well, with items now representing treasures worth stealing, and the trampolines fitting as one of Lupin’s many cheeky tools of thievery. This is worth checking out, if you enjoy retro gaming!
