The latest film, released on December 6th 2019 in Japanese theatres, has been reviewing well amongst viewers and critics alike. It has recently made first place on a movie poll for viewer satisfaction, beating the likes of Ghost Master and Last Christmas.
Various film fans took part in the survey with many voting for the film as it gave them many nostalgic memories of watching Lupin at a younger age. The fans surveyed went on to say that the film lived up to their expectations, and reminded them of many hours sat watching television in the 70’s and 80’s. They also said that 3DCG feels like a natural fit for Lupin and pals, and the new look does not feel out of place.
In terms of performance at the box office, Lupin III: The First drew in enough numbers on opening weekend to slot it in second place amongst cinema rankings for December 7th - 8th. The film came in at number two behind Disney’s latest animated feature film, Frozen 2. Read more information regarding the opening charts right here (Japanese language).
