Lupin III: Part 6 second act and OST announced!
The second act / cour of Lupin III: Part 6 has been announced to begin in January 2022, and will focus on two keywords: mystery and women.
The first act, which is currently broadcasting in Japan and in select territories around the world, has a focus on crime and London. Unlike the first, the second act will see the gang ditching the capital of England to travel all around the world on new adventures.
Many women will appear in front of Lupin III — what do they want with our hero, and what stories will they bring with them?
Shigeru Murakoshi (ZOMBIE LAND SAGA) is due to replace Takahiro Okura as lead of series composition.
The second act is due to finish the show’s twenty-four episode run, as it comes to an end during Spring next year. By our estimates, the final episode should air on March 26th 2022 in the United States (subject to change).
Check out the latest key visual by Hirotaka Marufuji below, which includes an early look at the female characters due to be introduced throughout act two.
Additionally, a brand new OST from Yuji Ohno is due to release on January 26th 2022.
The second soundtrack, titled “Women”, will feature some songs exclusive to the second act of the show. Like the first album, we suspect the complete tracklist will include around twenty-five to thirty music tracks.
Pre-order sales for the album open in Japan today, with more details to be announced closer to its release. A music video featuring the theme tune from Part 6 has been uploaded to YouTube in celebration of the announcement — watch it below once it goes live in three days (from time of writing) on November 12th!
More details on act two can be viewed on the official Japanese website for the show here.
Reception to Part 6 thus far has been mixed.
It is certainly doing something different, for better or for worse.
Even without the consideration of staff changes and this two act structure, the show lacks consistency. For all the media hype regarding Lupin VS Sherlock and the gang on adventures within the United Kingdom, the idea appears to be getting abandoned quickly. This feels like a missed opportunity, and we can’t imagine as to why this decision has been made.
Many have been enjoying what the show has had to offer, however, and rightfully so.
Lupin can be at its best when doing something unexpected and new, and if it isn’t for everyone, that’s okay. Some appreciate the more “out there” guest writing from the likes of Mamoru Oshii, and the shifting tones of each episode (which remind us of Part 1 and Part 2 with the way it jumps around).
It is likely that, as the first act has featured one-shot guest written episodes with the theme of crime fiction, that in act two we will likely see the same but for mystery writing. This should give us some interesting storylines, and will likely see riffs on classic mystery novels that many are going to appreciate.
Our opinion?
The weekly disappointment thus far has been enough for us to want to cut ties, in terms of personal viewing. As Lupin fans since 2009, this was not something we could have ever seen coming.
We are excited to read what more dedicated viewers think to each episode, and we will be posting our thoughts as part of our episode reviews — but so far, what a disappointment Part 6 has been for us.
