Green VS Red now available digitally in the USA!
The 2008 OVA Lupin III: Green VS Red is now available digitally in the United States!
This marks the first time the film has featured in HD in the United States, previously only receiving a standard definition DVD release from Discotek Media.
The film is directed by Shigeyuki Miya and features a rather bizarre plot exploring the concept of Lupin III as not only a single person, but also as an identity, namesake and legacy. The film features some impressive animation, which stands the test of time over a decade on.
Only the original Japanese audio version is available on Amazon, as no English audio dub has been produced at time of writing. Check out a fun scene from the film below, along with a quick story synopsis from Amazon!
If Lupin is stealing something in one place, how can he be shoplifting in another place entirely? One Lupin wears red; the other wears green. In the final standoff, whose side will Jigen, Goemon and Fujiko choose? After all, as the world's number one thief, there can't be two of him!
In our opinion, while by no means essential, Green VS Red provides an interesting watch for existing fans of the franchise. It borders on the impossible to follow at times, but if you can detach yourself from thinking too deeply about the plot and the overarching series canon, it provides a gorgeous celebration of everything Lupin III.
The 80 minute runtime is filled with references to previous works in the series, not only in its scenes but also in terms of music and animation style. If you are new to the series, this might be too difficult to follow - but if you’re a veteran fan that’s unafraid of the more out there content, this may well be for you.
