Discotek Media detail upcoming “Mystery of Mamo” Blu-ray!

The 1978 theatrical Lupin III film The Mystery of Mamo is returning to home video in the United States – and this time on Blu-ray!

Originally released on DVD by Discotek Media on February 26th 2013, The Mystery of Mamo is notable for being the first ever animated feature length Lupin III film. It is often cited by those studying animation from a critical standpoint, and by fans as one of their favourite entries in the franchise.

While the atmosphere / characterization is dark at times and the plot goes rather zany, it is perhaps one of the most Lupin-like films to exist to date. Mamo draws parallels to the original manga series in terms of tone and art style, and it is considered an all-time classic amongst fans.

The new release is to include updated liner notes, the Japanese audio dub and all four English dubs. The English dubs included are from Frontier Productions (1978), Streamline Pictures (1994), Manga UK (1995) and Geneon / Phuuz (2005).

A new trailer is also available, which compiles a handful of scenes shown during the film. This includes some violence, nudity, and scenes of a sexual nature (and as such, we weren’t able to embed it on this page). You can watch it on Twitter, proving your account passes the minimum age criteria, by clicking here.

Check out a full list of special features below, in what is perhaps one of the largest Lupin releases from Discotek yet (in terms of extra content, anyway)!

  • Theatrical and television trailers, both Japan and overseas versions

  • Creditless ending sequence

  • International opening and ending sequences

  • An extensive artwork gallery

  • “Why Mamo Matters,” an essay by Mike Toole

  • “A history of Mamo in English”

  • Written interview with voice actor Bill Dufris

  • Liner notes written and compiled by Lupinthe3rd.com staff

  • Translation of the original film program

  • Includes a total of nine different audio tracks, consisting of four English dubs, original / remastered audio versions, and an isolated score

The new Blu-ray version of Mamo is expected to release on March 29th 2022.

If you are living within the United States, pre-orders are soon to be open from Amazon and RightStufAnime. If you are living abroad and plan on importing a copy, be aware that import fees and custom charges are likely to be applied, depending on location.

We are extremely excited for what is looking to be the “definitive” release of this classic 1978 film, and cannot wait to check it out. Roll on March!
