What a time to be (Dead or) Alive!

The 1996 theatrical film Lupin III: Dead or Alive is coming to Blu-ray in the United States in 2022!

Announced as part of Discotek Media’s Anime Boston panel, the film is due to release on HD video format in the U.S. for the first time, along with the original Japanese language and FUNimation English language dubs.

Released one year after Farewell to Nostradamus, the slightly darker Dead or Alive features superb visuals reminiscent of the original manga series, by Monkey Punch. In addition to the impressive visuals, the film boasts a more serious storyline that still peppers in plenty of fun moments, involving the characters you know and love.

Monkey Punch himself, the original creator of Lupin III, helped to direct the film’s thrilling opening chase sequence, along with the climactic finale. Originally, Monkey Punch was pencilled in to direct the entire film, however due to the challenges presented along the way, the late manga artist took a step back from its production. Remaining humble in his decision, he made sure the other team members on the film received proper credit, and championed them for their spirit and resolve in tackling, what he considered, such a difficult task.

As mentioned earlier, this latest release includes the FUNimation English dub. This was included as part of an uncut DVD release from 2005, which starred Sonny Strait as Lupin, Christopher Sabat as Jigen, Mike McFarland as Goemon, Meredith McCoy as Fujiko, and Phillip Wilburn as Inspector Zenigata.

Special features are to include an art gallery, trailers, credits, and an interview with Monkey Punch himself. More information is to be revealed closer to release, which is expected in the latter half of 2022. For now, watch the new trailer, and look forward to checking this one out!
